Quebec man killed in 1000 Islands Regatta

A Quebec man who was racing in the 1000 Islands Regatta was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon in a tragic accident during competition in Brockville’s downtown waterfront.

Mathieu Daoust, of Valleyfield, was involved in a collision rounding the second turn of a Grand Prix heat.

Women and men broke into tears as the bitter news was received and the remaining races have been cancelled.

Brockville Police and firefighters were called to the scene at Centeen Park at 12:30 p.m.

“I am in shock,” the boat’s owner, Line Mayer, said in a brief French-language interview at the scene.

It wasn’t the first accident of the day. Earlier another crash had already delayed the races when a Hydro 350 boat, piloted by Ghislain Marcoux, flipped in a gust of wind.

More details to come.
